The Unesco World Heritage Committee, meeting in Baku (Azerbaijan), has supported the cultural landscape of Risco Caído and the sacred mountains of Gran Canaria to be included in the list of World Heritage
Unesco has declared World Heritage the cultural landscape of Risco Caído and the sacred mountains of Gran Canaria.
Risco Caído is a pre-Hispanic archaeological site of troglodyte settlements with temples and markers of clear astronomical connotations. This cultural site covers an area of almost 18,000 hectares between the nominated area (9,425 hectares) and the buffer zone (8,557 hectares), just over 11% of the entire surface area of the island.
Risco Caído, the space that serves as a center for this project formed by several archaeological sites, is located in one of the best conserved areas of Gran Canaria, with much less population and economic development than on the coast.
The aboriginal societies that inhabited Gran Canaria for about 1,500 years before the arrival of the Europeans were formed by Berbers or Amaziges of North African origin.
